Little is known about Hans Hannau, though he was a likely the most prolific photographer of travel books, particularly of The Caribbean.
Hannau moved to Florida after the Second World War. Intrigued by The Sunshine State, he photographed its many unique and delightful sights. His photography is rooted in early 20th century craft and aesthetics, combining pictorial conventions with fresh eyes from seeing this new land with wonder.
He wanted to continue photographing throughout the expansive state. So he took his new photographs to Hasting House, where he requested advance funding for a proposed book. The acquisitions editor said it looked like the project is complete, and Hastings House published Florida: A Photographic Journey in 1948.
Hans Hannau’s photographs are silver gelatin prints made by the artist on fiber paper. Each print is titled and singed on verso. A selection of Hannau’s early photographs in and around Viena, Austria is also available.
Prices: Prints measure 8"x10" and are $3,500 each.
