Mary Ann Carroll: First Lady of the Highwaymen

Gary Monroe, 2014
Mary Ann Carroll
As the sole female of the cohort, Mary Ann Carroll holds a special place in the Highwaymen story. Her lifestyle was different than her 25 male counterparts; as a single parent she had to be home when the afternoon school bell rang, prepare diner and make sure that her seven children did their homework and got a good night’s sleep. Yet this tenacious woman held her own with her male counterparts. She painted veraciously, distinguished her art with unique color sensibility, and kept up with the men as she sold her paintings door-to-door–and all this during the tumultuous civil rights era.
