The Highwaymen Murals: Al Black's Concrete Dreams

Gary Monroe, 2009
Al Black
Al Black was the chief salesman for the Highwaymen, and after Alfred Hair’s death he became a painter. The most colorful of the artists, his exploits seemed like fiction. He was said to have the most silver of tongues; his ability sell was unparalleled. But when sales dropped, Al Black resorted to crack cocaine, and was soon imprisoned for possession and grand theft. The warden honored his request to paint, and soon the cinderblock walls came alive with 90 murals. They were so revered the artist was sent to paint murals in other prisons. A model program, the Highwaymen murals is the icing of an already sweet story.
