Self-Taught Art

Patricia Calamari

Patricia Calamari believed in theexceptional creative potential in people with disabilities. "Theirs is pure art," she said, explaining that these individuals communicate without ulterior motives. Her process often involved two or three people working on a single painting. By understanding which artist's mark-making strengths can best complement works-in-progress, Calamari's orchestrated the compositions by moving, turning and positioning the paintings and pastels among the participants.
